Red Shallots and onions are both members of the same plant family but different species. This means that they are related, but shallots are not “a younger version of an onion.” The shallot’s closest relatives are garlic, chive, leeks and Chinese onions.

 

Compared to onions, red shallots are usually smaller with only size 2-4cm or so, have finer layers and contain less water, but more spicy, stronger aroma.
